Rapid Reviews #2 - Graphic Novels

Sometimes you need to just get to the point, you don't need to go on and on and on and on about a book that you have enjoyed (or not).

This is what Rapid Reviews is for, my quick words of wisdom....

This week some graphic novels reads that have been on my pile.

Published by Image - 13th May 2015

The back cover says....

Once upon a time, there were five crazy people, and they poisoned the 21st Century. Now they have to deal with the corrosion to try and save us all from a world becoming too weird to support human life. INJECTION is the new ongoing series created by the acclaimed creative team of Moon Knight. It is science fiction, tales of horror, strange crime fiction, techno-thriller, and ghost story all at the same time. A serialised sequence of graphic novels about how loud and strange the world is getting, about the wild future and the haunted past all crashing into the present day at once, and about five eccentric geniuses dealing with the paranormal and numinous as well as the growing weight of what they did to the planet with the Injection.
It looks...

Dark and mysterious.......

The words are....

Also dark and mysterious, told from the present and the past.  I have read it a couple of times and I'm still not entirely sure what happened, make it becomes clearer in the second volume?

Who should read it....

Lovers of dark and mysterious comics

I rate it

The back cover says....

Millennia ago, mankind fled the earth's surface into the bottomless depths of the darkest oceans. Shielded from a merciless sun's scorching radiation, the human race tried to stave off certain extinction by sending robotic probes far into the galaxy, to search for a new home among the stars. Generations later, one family is about to be torn apart, in a conflict that will usher in the final race to save humanity from a world beyond hope. Dive into an aquatic fantasy like none you've ever seen before, as writer RICK REMENDER (BLACK SCIENCE, Captain America) and artist GREG TOCCHINI (Last Days of American Crime) bring you a tale of mankind's final hour in the cold, deathly dark of the sea. Collects LOW #1-6.

It looks...

Good, beautiful illustrated cover.
The words are....

I thought I would like this, end of the world books are usually my cup of tea but I just couldn't get in to this at all I am afraid.

Who should read it....

Water babies and lovers of all things wet.

I rate it

The Sunday Post #62 - 23rd July 2017

Welcome to my Sunday Post, a weekly meme hosted by Kimberley over at the Caffeinated Book Reviewer . Join me as I ramble about my week in and out of the blogosphere.

Not a lot to report I'm afraid.  Work has been busy but on the plus side at the end of the week I have a weeks holiday coming up which I can't wait for.

I have been trying to keep at my running but the update to Zombies Run app has put the stoppers on that with its bugs that have stopped me in my tracks.  Hopefully that'll be sorted soon as I am really enjoying going for my runs.

Did we all enjoy Game of Thrones? It was very enjoyable and that start was brilliant, Go Arya!!

Have a great week everyone!

Podcastastic #7 - Mars Corp

The day that I walked in to Night Vale was the day I fell in love with podcasts.

My phone how ever got pissed off quickly as it liked Angry Birds and I'd went and put it in the great recycle bin in the cloud to make way for episodes of quirky shows that me, the owner of said phone likes!

Anyway this week I've been listening to......

Welcome to MarsCorp! You might feel disorientated at first, being 140 million miles from Earth, but there’s no need to panic. As soon as you recover from your journey in suspended animation and get to know your new state of the art MarsCorp home you’ll feel totally comfortable and ready to engage with your tasks on the MarsCorp terraforming mission. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the MarsCorp departments and your fellow workers. In the event of not feeling totally comfortable at MarsCorp, please contact the base manager.
Terra-forming on Mars leads me to think of film like Alien, dark gloomy vistas, metallic looking bases with flickering lights and water dripping from the ceiling (well I think it's water, could be alien goo), anyway I don't imagine bureaucratic officiousness, bonkers behaviour, lots of boozing and inappropriate behaviour.

Mars Corp has all of this in spades, it is hysterical.  It follows Earthling EL Hobb as she is awoken on Mars after being sent their from Earth to work with the terra-forming of the planet, she discovers a base that is barely managing itself and with a bureaucratic rod of iron, she starts kicking arses!

Each episode takes us to another near disaster from fighting with the crazy power hungry resources department or discovering that there may be an added ingredient to the "meat" they eat or finding that the local miners are several sandwiches short of a picnic.

Hobb goes about her day coming in to contact with the weird and wonderful characters that live on the base that include Chip (an android), David Knight (crazy scientist), Martin Mann (base commander, drug enthusiast) to name a few.

It is really entertaining and genuinely funny, it reminds me a little of the Hitchhikers Guide if it was transported to Mars.

Add this to your weekly pod subscriptions!

Running for my life - Zombies Run 5K - Week Four Take One

Over the last few years I have dabbled with running, every time using Six to Start's awesome Zombies Run and Zombies Run 5K app, each time I have failed miserably.  I would diligently go out and try my best but I think the most I managed to last was a month.  I have no willpower.

I am a failure.

But that is not the attitude and I don't know what is different this time, it could be the fact I have bought a decent sports bra and a hands free dog lead which FYI is the best thing ever.  These two simple things along with some spark inside me screaming at me to get going has led me back to Zombies Run 5K.

Zombies Run is excellent, the combination of story and exercise, ZR5K takes those same elements but puts you through 8 weeks (with three chapters/workouts a week) of turning your lack of running to a whole 5k of running.

Can I make it to week 8?  Well I thought if I posted to the internet my weekly progress it would help me get there.
ZR5K - WEEK 4 TAKE ONE

So this week was great and I would tell you exactly what I did which included a 15 minute free form run but I am afraid Houston we have a problem and for once it is nothing to do with my fitness prowess.

The app has been updated and this is the first time it has been updated in a long time.

The update is great and has new bells and whistles that add to the whole experience but it has also locked everything from week 4 onwards.  For new users anything past week 4 now has to be paid for.

Now I downloaded this originally back in 2013 so I have been told existing users will of course be granted access and won't have to pay which is great but they are still working on unlocking it which of course takes time.

I have contacted tech support as they have release several updates to the update but that hasn't cleared it so my choice at the moment is to either pay as I have no patience or go back and do week 3 until its sorted.

So hopefully next time I write this it'll be sorted!

REVIEW - Hell Divers II Ghosts by Nicholas Sansbury Smith

Title: Hell Divers II

Author: Nicholas Sansbury Smith

Publisher: Blackstone

Release Date: 18th July 2017

Source: Net Galley
Ten years ago, Hell Diver Xavier “X” Rodriguez fell to Earth. Those he left behind went on without him aboard the airship he once called home. Michael Everheart—the boy once known as Tin—has grown into a man and the commander of Hell Diver Raptor Team. While Michael dives to help keep the Hive in the air, Captain Leon Jordan rules with an iron fist at the helm of the ship. But unrest stirs under his strict leadership as a prophecy of hope sweeps the lower decks.

When a mysterious distress signal calls the Hell Divers to the surface, Michael and his loyal team begin to uncover long-buried truths and the secrets Captain Jordan will do anything to keep. They dive so humanity survives … but will they survive the ultimate betrayal?

USA Today bestselling author Nicholas Sansbury Smith delivers another heart-pounding thriller in Hell Divers 2: Ghosts, the second book in the acclaimed science fiction series.
Usually after I've read the first book in a series and I've really enjoyed it, I long for the second book. When that second book lands in my hand then the nerves set in, will it be as good as the first book, will the characters that I have invested my time in still be worth reading about.

Hell Divers II - Ghosts thankfully is I feel better than the first book, it is sent ten years after the events that left X Rodriguez stranded on the godforsaken planet that was destroyed during WW3. A new crew of Hell Divers are on duty and a new ship's captain.

The main Hell Diver is Michael aka Tin from book one, now grown up he is following in his late father and his late guardian X's footsteps.

I won't go in depth with the story but this instalment centres around a mysterious signal that has been received from down below on Earth.  As we discovered in the last book the planet below is far from empty but the creatures that roam the planet are far from friendly and they are in the way of the Hell Divers getting to the source of the signal.

Is there anyone left alive down there after all these years and why is the Captain hiding another transmission that has been broadcast?

I really enjoyed this, the setting is still hellish and perfectly described.  The creatures down below are still murderous and what I liked was that you get an idea of exactly how the came about.

This series has gotten better which is a rare treat and has me very hopeful for the next book.

Thank you to Blackstone for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Running for my life - Zombies Run 5K - Week Three

So without futher ado, my thoughts on Week 3

ZR5K - WEEK 3

Defeated.

No I wasn't eaten by zombies, I melodramatically hit my imaginary wall.

Yep, I managed the first day of week 3, then I went all out on a new route on day 2, change of scenery and all but when I came to do day 3, smack, straight in to the wall.

Week 3 really ups the ante with a 5 minute walk followed by a 5 minute free form run.  Then five reps of 1 minute running followed by 1 minute walking then 10 seconds of knee lifts.  But that's not all then there was another free-form run for 8 minutes then 2 minutes if stretching then to finish it all of 8 minutes of yes you guessed it free-form running.

Twice I went out and twice I failed, to be honest I was really tired this week and I was a little gutted I couldn't do it, it was weird like my legs where heavy and tired, I was also a little scared that I actually wanted to run, what is wrong with me?!

Anyway on Tuesday it was a beautiful sunny evening and I thought fuck it, I'm going to try again, and I did it plus really enjoyed it, the sun was shining, the dog was behaving herself and nobody was about so I could sing along to my gangsta rap and cheesy dance tunes.

I am a little peeved that I fell by the wayside but I am by no means an Olympic athlete, what I have realised though is that if I am exercising more I need to look at what is going in to my body. Which sucks!

I am pleased though that I didn't just go "sod it" and give up which the Heather of old might have done.

I am also looking forward to the upcoming Zombies Run 5K update which promises a fresh lick of paint to the app.

This week I have been "motivated" by.......
